A change to the published Templars theme which we'll save til Aldwark Bridge reopens. So 1a ride this week north/south across stiff westerlies.
We are looking at the work of architect E B Lamb in a route out via Aldwark to Thirkleby and then Sowerby, returning via Bagby to Crayke. There'll be an option for carryout coffee as we pass through Easingwold and picnic lunch in Thirsk market square - warm food/drink options available. About 62 miles and 2000ft.
Edward Buckton Lamb (1806–1869) was a British architect labelled a 'Rogue Gothic Revivalist', and his designs were widely criticised for breaking with convention, especially by The Ecclesiologist journal. Nikolaus Pevsner, in his volume on North Yorkshire called him "the most original though certainly not the most accomplished architect of his day”.
We are lucky to have 4 Lamb churches just north of York all showing his quirky, "rogue" style. We'll keep an eye on the weather and won't dwell too long at each site.
